The Veterinary Assistant supports the veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets, advocates for pets, educates clients on all aspects of pet health, and ensures a safe and effective hospital environment. Responsibilities include acting as extra eyes, ears and hands for veterinarians and technicians to ensure quality pet care and maximize productivity; communicating with team members to maintain patient flow; providing professional, efficient, and exceptional service including performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian or technician assistance; educating clients about wellness plans, preventive care, and pet health needs; obtaining client information and maintaining medical charts; ensuring safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean treatment areas; assisting with surgery as applicable; utilizing technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines; mentoring other paraprofessionals; and other assigned duties. The role requires adherence to the Five Principles of Mars, Inc., leadership and functional competencies such as action orientation, customer focus, effective communication, and problem solving. Candidates must have the ability to multi-task, strong communication and organizational skills, client service skills, intellectual and mathematical ability, and computer skills. Attitudes required include initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and tolerance for stress. Special working conditions include ability to work at a computer for long periods, confidence around pets, ability to work more than 40 hours per week including weekends and evenings, and physical requirements such as standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to various hazards. Experience and education requirements include a certificate from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program or equivalent, high school diploma preferred, minimum age 18 for radiography duties, and one year related experience preferred.
